As an experienced classroom teacher and external marker, I am alarmed at the continued decline in the standard of academic writing at all levels in secondary schools. It is obvious today that fewer students have the ability and skills to write in a sophisticated style that displays perception, independent reflection, and convincing communication.
It is our duty to provide our students with the skills and capabilities to empower them to not only improve their writing, but to be confident to succeed in writing in all disciplines. We can make a difference; but we need to learn new skills and strategies ourselves to make this happen.
