The Best They've Ever Done
“In burgeoning suburban Brisbane sits Rochedale State High School,” says Deputy Principal Nathan Smith. “We’re in the second year of our Write that Essay journey. Although our students were capable writers, we weren’t hitting the benchmarks we aspired to. We thought the Write that Essay programme could really elevate our students from that middle to high ground to excellent writing. And so far, the results are showing us that. After four weeks, one Year 7 class could quote me the sentence structures and how to use them. It sinks in so easily. Further evidence is that after one term using WTE, we had more students in the upper two bands in writing for our NAPLAN results. It was the best we’ve had for a long time.
The other marker for us was that our Year 12 students in the last year of the OP system performed the best they’ve ever done in the history of the school. When we investigated this success and looked at the individual results, the writing improvement was the biggest driver of the success we achieved. It was impressive. So those two areas show that the programme is working.
Now that we’re in our second year, we’ve made sure every single student has access to Writer’s Toolbox and was given their own 12 Ways to Write a Sentence and 8 Handy Paragraph cards. Staff want to use the programme with all their students, and parents can use these tools with their children at home.”
